Syllabus :- Gastrointestinal agents Acidifiers: Ammonium chloride* and Dil. HCl Antacid: Ideal properties of antacids, combinations of antacids, Sodium Bicarbonate*, Aluminum hydroxide gel, Magnesium hydroxide mixture Cathartics: Magnesium sulphate, Sodium orthophosphate, Kaolin and Bentonite Antimicrobials: Mechanism, classification, Potassiu permanganate, Boric acid, Hydrogen peroxide*, Chlorinated lime*, Iodine and its preparations Gastrointestinal agents Gastrointestinal (GI) agents include many different classes of drugs that are used to treat gastrointestinal disorders. They can be classed as: 5-aminosalicylates, antacids, antidiarrheals, digestive enzymes, functional bowel disorder agents, gallstone solubilizing agents, GI stimulants, H. Acidifiers: Acidifiers are inorganic chemicals that, put into a human body, either produce or become acid. These chemicals increase the level of gastric acid in the stomach when ingested, thus decreasing the stomach pH. Antacid: An antacid is a substance which neutralizes stomach acidity and is used to relieve heartburn, indigestion or an upset stomach. Some antacids have been used in the treatment of constipation and diarrhea. Currently marketed antacids contain salts of aluminum, calcium, magnesium, or sodium. Cathartics: Cathartics are drugs used to relieve. constipation or bring out defecation. Antimicrobials: An antimicrobial agent is defined as a natural or synthetic substance that kills or inhibits the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and algae.
